Our Methods
Proven paths to healing
The Codependency Clinic enjoys a higher success rate than many other counseling centers due to our commitment to empirically-proven methods that get real results.
These methods are not taught as part of a master’s in counseling or psychology, so while therapists who stopped their education there will “do no harm,” they will often provide no benefit either.
That’s why we invest heavily in each of our therapists’ continuing education, with an emphasis on the following methods:
EMDR
EMDR, or “Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing,” is one of the most empirically validated trauma treatment methods available. It’s valued by the U.S. military for treating PTSD, and we frequently use this method to help clients who have experienced major traumatic events. Every one of our therapists is certified in EMDR.
Somatic experiencing
Somatic experiencing addresses trauma that’s expressed in the body – especially in a hypervigilant nervous system. We often use this method if the trauma was physical or occurred early in life before it could be adequately expressed in language.
Pia Mellody Method
Pia Mellody is responsible for developing a theory and treatment of codependency that has been incredibly effective. We use and address her 5 Core Issues, including:
- Self-esteem
- Boundaries
- Reality
- Dependency
- Moderation
Internal family systems Therapy
IFS Therapy acknowledges that the mind is often in conflict with various painful emotions (or “sub-personalities”), such as anger or shame, attempting to control, and thus protect, the core self. This method sees the mind as a family of various systems and attempts to rebalance these systems into a healthy, functioning whole.
These methods are complementary and may be used together to aid healing, especially in our retreat setting.
