Therapy For Codependency

Are You Tired Of Over-Functioning?

When you grow up in an emotionally unsafe or inconsistent home environment, you can learn early on that you are the one who has to keep it together for everyone around you. As a result, you may now be feeling an overwhelming sense of responsibility, perfectionism, anxiety, and lack of boundaries in just about every area of your life.

And who could blame you? After all, you were the hero of your family, likely never supported to vocalize your needs or ask for help. Instead, you adopted the role of helper, now consistently taking on the emotional burden at home and likely working in a career where others’ stress and trauma are at the center of your profession.

It’s exhausting to live like this, and we know how to help. At The Codependency Clinic, we are a team of highly trained clinicians who use a range of experiential, evidence-based therapy approaches to target complex trauma at the source. As you learn to connect to your authentic needs in the process of counseling, you can begin to foster a more self-compassionate and embodied existence.

What Is Codependency?

Codependency is a highly familiar concept among therapists and other trauma specialists. Typically, it stems from relational trauma and anxious or avoidant early attachments, including those formed by parents/caregivers who were narcissists, alcoholics, borderline, and/or otherwise inconsistent or unavailable. While individual mental health concerns like anxiety and over-functioning are very common among adult children of these parents, it’s usually our relationships where we observe the most lasting effects of codependency—particularly the feeling that we will never be enough

The need to fix and over-perform is an understandable response to being raised in these circumstances, and in fact, this is a trauma response that was, at one point, essential to your survival. But this reaction is no longer necessary, and it’s costly to your wellbeing.

Codependent behaviors are learned behaviors, and just as you’ve adapted to become anti-dependent, you can learn to foster a sense of interdependence on the path to relational fulfillment.

Therapy is a valuable, life-changing opportunity to examine the behaviors and beliefs created by codependency. Working with our passionate and experienced therapists, you can learn essential skills for managing the difficult relationship dynamics in your life—and enjoying the good ones.

Individual Counseling Through The Codependency Clinic

As therapists with years of personal and professional experience in the field of codependency, our practice was founded out of a desire to help clients from less-than-nurturing home environments establish more integrated and balanced lives. We are a team of complex trauma specialists who understand and identify with the exhaustion that comes from codependent relationships, over-functioning, and an inability to understand and honor your own needs.

The goal of therapy for codependency is to help you learn:

  1. The five core symptoms of codependence

  2. How those symptoms were set up in childhood

  3. How those symptoms are showing up in your adult relationships

  4. Skills and insights for reducing distress around early trauma

  5. What you need to cultivate a functional adult self

  6. How to create a tangible plan for getting the life that you want

We do this by integrating a range of evidence-based, experiential therapy methods to challenge the narratives created within the context of codependency, including somatic approaches and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to target unresolved trauma. And for clients looking to expedite the healing process or who have scheduling limitations, our Return To Self retreat is specifically structured to address long-standing effects of codependency and complex PTSD over the course of a week.

You Are Enough

Our therapists are codependency specialists who will help you trace symptoms to their core on the pathway to understanding and reprocessing complex trauma. As you emerge from therapy with a more complete self-understanding, you can begin to let go of the need to over-perform and over-function—particularly when it comes to your relationships.

Through the counseling process, you can achieve stronger emotional awareness, an ability to tolerate imperfection, an increase in joy and spontaneity in your life, and a more functional boundary system. As you grow the capacity for your own humanity, you will be set up for a more fulfilling, embodied, and interconnected life.

Common Concerns About Therapy for Codependency ...

I’ve already seen a bunch of other therapists and didn’t get the results I was looking for—how will treatment through your practice be any different?

Our clients are smart, high-performing individuals who’ve often been in therapy for many years. They may have experienced temporary relief following treatment, but have found sooner or later that their relationships remain dysfunctional, imbalanced, and/or unfulfilling.

Though conventional approaches can be very effective for initially exploring and identifying emotions, talk therapy alone is often insufficient for long-term recovery from trauma and codependency. Our practice is a team of highly trained specialists who’ve made codependency treatment our life’s work. Using proven, experiential therapies, we target complex trauma at the source, offering our clients a pathway to a more wholesome, authentic existence.

Therapy will take too long to make a difference.

Though trauma recovery doesn’t happen overnight, counseling is a meaningful way to understand and combat the effects of codependency in your life. We invite you to take a look at our testimonials above to see for yourself how therapy can make a difference for you and your experience of codependency.

If the duration of therapy remains a concern, note that our weeklong Return To Self retreat accomplishes in days what might otherwise take months or years in weekly counseling. Visit our Codependency Retreat page for more information.

I am concerned about the cost of therapy.

Counseling is an expense, but it is an investment in yourself and a happier, healthier future. Our practice aims to make its services as accessible as possible, and we will help you submit a bill for reimbursement if your insurance provider offers out-of-network benefits.

Feel free to calculate the cost of therapy using our widget or contact us for more information.

You Deserve Peace
